my favorite things // 02-17-2014

I didn’t do my usual “favorite things” post on Saturday, since I’m in the middle of this whole “blog every day in February” thing with set prompts and such, and I kinda missed it! This past week was quite solid, and chock full of little moments of goodness, but I’ll narrow it down.

1. BLOGGING. Holy cow I have spent so much time on it lately. With writing a post every day, plus tweaking with the overall design of this here blog, it’s been a lot. I’m not sure if I should call it wasting time, or being productive. It makes me feel better to think I’m accomplishing something, so we’re going to go with the productivity description. Plus, there’s some serious enjoyment going on over here with all of this, so it’s a win-win in my eyes. I talked about my future blogging hopes in this post, and I seriously wish that work and an education didn’t have to happen all the time, because I totally have the capacity sit at my laptop for hours doing blog-related things. I’d say finally buying my own domain ( was one of the highlights of my week, mainly because now I feel super-legit (although whether I really am legit or not is quite debatable).

2. THE OLYMPICS. Yes, I know I already mentioned this in another favorites post, but guys, it just keeps getting better! I’m about ready to become a figure skater over here. And if that doesn’t work out, then Plan B is the ski jump. The thrill-seeking side of me is making its appearance, and flying through the air, without anything holding you up, or holding you back, just looks like some serious fun. (image source)

3. THROWIN’ IT BACK. I watched “Camp Rock” on Saturday morning, and “High School Musical 2” last weekend, because, well, they were on Netflix, and why not. I was in the mood for some nostalgia and a throwback to the days when Disney Channel original movies were my favorite movies ever. Since this was back before the popularity of Facebook and Twitter and all of that, my best friend and I sent each other emails full of lots of colored font, all-caps sentences, and numerous exclamations of excitement for weeks before High School Musical 2 was about to come out. Let’s just say that watching those movies this time around was a bit more amusing than it was when I was in middle school… (image source)

4. UNEXPECTED COMPLIMENTS. They’re just the nicest, you know?

5. BLUE SKIES AFTER RAIN. I’ve actually really enjoyed the torrential rain the past few days here, and it has made for some epic running adventures, but today the sky is a medium-soft blue and I love it. The world is beginning to hint just a tiny bit at spring, and it’s wonderful.

my favorite things // 02-08-2014

-the olympics – so i kind of have this really strange obsession with the olympics. there’s just something about the whole world (or a lot of it, at least) setting aside their differences and coming together to compete that just gets me. i know it’s not all quite as idealistic and picture-perfect as that, but the principal behind it is admirable. and the winter olympics are my absolute favorite! everyone seems to prefer the summer olympics, but i just have a thing for figure skating and watching people ski and bobsled and jump off of ramps really high into the air and all of that jazz.

-clair de lune – i had a friend ask me the other day if i could play this, and i actually haven’t ever learned this piece, so i dug through my music to check it out. i think i’ve shied away from it just because of it’s popularity, and i prefer to be less mainstream with my music. but holy cow! this song is beautiful! it’s been running through my head since monday afternoon, when i sat down played through it for the first time. if you’ve never heard it before, watch this video!

-telling secrets – if you’ve been following me for longer than a couple weeks, then you might remember this post, where i talked about my fear of telling people in my real life about my blogging. well guess what? i actually did it! and now i honestly don’t know what i was so afraid of, because the response has been so overwhelmingly amazing and supportive. i’m so grateful for wonderful friends who don’t find it weird that i write all of this randomness. thank you, thank you, thank you!

leave a comment with some of your favorite things this week! i love hearing from you!

happiness is…?

i think the overarching concept of happiness is something terribly deep and hard to put a single finger on. for me, my faith is what brings my absolute, true happiness, hands-down. but in addition to that, my life is so unbelievably chock full of little bits of happiness to add to the huge mix. everyone always says, “it’s all about the little things,” and as over-used as this phrase is, it is so, so true. it’s those small, tangible happenings that make me appreciate how truly good life really is. i dare you to look for those things around you, those little pieces of life where you find your happiness.

so in the life of tessa kohler, happiness is…

…writing. this has been something that i’ve kind of stumbled into the past few months, but i really do love it. i wouldn’t complain too much if i could quit school and just write pretty words all day.

…daydreaming about romance.

…unexpected snow. when you wake up to find those gorgeous thick flakes cascading down the sky, especially when they’ve already done a thorough job of coating the whole world already, that’s goodness right there!

…savoring rich moments with family.

…hot chocolate. lots of people drink tea or coffee…mmm yup i’m hot chocolate all the way. in the winter, in the summer, all year long. i’m pretty sure it is a drink full of magical powers. or maybe that’s just sugar…

…being pleasantly surprised in little ways.

…running in the morning. i’m terrible at waking up early, or even semi-early, but when i’m able to drag myself out of bed for an early-ish morning weekend run, it’s quite stellar. i love running when there’s a little biting chill in the air and when the world hasn’t quite woken up yet. i just let my mind wander around and around and by the time i walk in my front door again my thoughts are much clearer.

…when people you love start to turn their prospects around for the better.

…bright lipstick. yep, you’ve already heard a lot about this one, so i’ll just keep it at that. (if you’re new to the blog, read this post for an introduction to my obssession!)

…talking to people you haven’t seen in a long time. this goes for communication in person, or communication over the internet. either way, it’s a lovely thing indeed to be able to catch up with people you can’t see on a regular basis.

…when pandora gets it spot on. sometimes pandora radio just knows, ya know?

where do you find your little bits of happiness?

also! if you’re new to the blog and want to do some fun reading, i recommend going up to the top of this page and clicking on the “about” tab, or on the “favorite posts” tab (if you’re reading this on a mobile device, click on “menu” at the top of the page first to get to those additional tabs)!

this post was inspired by the Daily Prompt (albeit an eternity late)!

my favorite things // 02-01-2014

– kid president. oh my goodness, this kid is just so cute and happy and his videos just brighten my day! i saw some of his videos a few months ago, but i forgot about him until yesterday when i came across one online. he’s just the best!

– oatmeal. i think i could eat oatmeal for every meal of the day. plain oatmeal isn’t all that great, but when you add a little brown sugar, and some peanut butter, or some chocolate chips, or some coconut (or all three)…mmm that’s good.

– snowflakes. especially those big, thick ones that come in all at once and take the world by surprise, until pretty soon everything is all white and fluffy and gorgeous.

p.s. in other news, i’m going to try to blog every day in february! i have my fingers crossed that i can get through the month, but i’m quite excited! so check back here every day for some sort of lovely something!

-ponytails. or, i guess i should say hair that is long enough for a ponytail. after cutting my hair super short in august, the fact that i finally have enough hair to put it in a decent ponytail is just wonderful! it’s been the kind of week where ponytails are almost a given, so thank goodness for long enough hair.

-sleep. sleep is just fantastic, right?

-breakfast dates with friends. kneaders is just a nice, warm, cozy place to be in the morning. good company + yummy food = great stuff, right there!
